What happens in therapy?

Therapy can look different, depending on the provider you choose. To determine if Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes is the right provider for you, below is a general outline of the therapeutic process with him, depending on your age and presenting problem.

  • Therapy With Children: Therapy with children is typically a collaborative process with both the parents and the child. Parents will meet with Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes for the first session, by themselves (i.e. no children present), to outline the current difficulties they are experiencing.

    • Future sessions will involve the parents for 5 minutes at the beginning and end of session, to discuss how the parent can be an active part in helping their child demonstrate appropriate behavior. The remaining time will be spent alone with the child engaging in activities to model and teach appropriate skills to reduce their negative behaviors and/or feelings.

  • Individual Therapy With Adults: Individual therapy typically focuses on the wants, issues, and goals, of the individual. You will work collaboratively with Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes to remove the obstacles in your life that are hindering your success.

  • Couples Therapy: Couples therapy focuses on bringing both partners into the room and discussing what roadblocks are currently present in their relationship, in a productive and appropriate manner. Sometimes, this can be done with the use of a couple’s assessment, to give empirical data about a couple’s strengths and weaknesses. Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes will assist you in identifying those roadblocks, as well as teaching and modeling appropriate skills to have a healthier relationship.

What is a couple’s assessment?

To help couples better understand their relationship, and their interactions with their partner, Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes can perform a couple’s assessment. This assessment will likely involve both individuals answering several questionnaires about their own behavior, as well as their interactions with their partner. Following this, Dr. Rougeaux-Burnes will provide both individuals with concrete data about the overall relationship, potential problem areas, and concrete recommendations to build a stronger and happier union.

Additionally, included in the cost of this assessment are three follow-up sessions to provide both individuals with an explanation of the results, as well as a way to provide the groundwork for improvement regarding their obstacles.
